busy days

I have a student staying with me for six weeks this summer - a guy Leo from Quebec through the YMCA Summer Exchange program. We are having a lot of fun so far - he's a pretty easy going fellow and Troy and myself are having fun getting to know him and taking him around and showing places. He went camping this weekend with the other students from Quebec I can imagine they didn't get much sleep last night and you don't get that good of a sleep when you are on the ground. I'm sure they had lots of fun though and their young they can bounce back and be fine - unlike us older folk :) We have been really busy, but a good busy and looking forward to what more of the summer will bring!

Sunny July

This summer has been crazy so far. I can't believe we are half way through July already! Yesterday I went to a beautiful garden party with some of my friends who were hosts. It was quite magical their yard is just marvelous and it really inspired me to go and buy flowers here in the community to start my own little 'secret garden'. I did some weeding today which was helpful. I think in the fall I'll buy a whole bunch where I can get some at really good prices. I don't want to have to plant things every year I'll buy ones that come up year after year. Some tiger lillies that a friend gave me to plant are blooming now and they are so beautiful :)

Young Arts Collective

One thing that came from National Youth Arts Week was the fact there is no 'exploratory' type art groups/classes for young people. I had a conversation with two different mom's about this and I said, "Well I guess that means we are going to have to create our own!" So that's what I'm working on. Last nigh we had an information night at the Mahone bay Centre with a group of 13 year olds and their parents. We talked about what they would like to do and see from the group. It as great. Now I get to go shopping for craft supplies - I love that! I think we are going to start of with claymation kind of stuff. I think it's going to be really fun!

National Youth Arts Week

Here`s a video to wrap up National Youth Arts Week happenings that I was apart in for Bridgewater. I`m even in the video talking about the art shows I helped organize!!!

old and lovely

I like antiques. I never really thought I did until I find myself drawn to older things at yardsales. I can't help myself. I never really got dressing tables, the purpose of them, but they really are beautiful! I like old cool mirrors and things that overall look rustic. I just like the look of things. I've always been attracted to older styles. I guess that's why I live in the type of house that I do. I like things with character. I dont really get the whole 'modern' stainless steel look. I don't know how anyone can be 'homey' in a place all furnished in a modern style. hmm.

Tuesday! What a beautiful day. I guess it doesn't really matter to me. I've been helping my parents out a lot lately with their real estate stuff. They are super busy and don't have the time to put into marketing, so i'm their little marketing girl! I actually like it even though my brain gets fried after a few hours. I find real estate very fascinating how it all works like manteo real estate and things like that. I find business' interesting in general. I don't really want to be a part of them but I find them interesting to say the least. Troy's business stresses me out and it's not even mine - i can't even imagine having my own. My aunt who was visiting from Whitehorse said that they don't really have any second hand clothing stores in Whitehorse. If i were to start a business that's where i would be. I know how much they thrive in small towns around here, let alone a big city! It would be perfect!

I used to paint all the time then got sidetracked with felting - but I'm happy to say that I'm back into painting and I really enjoy it. :) I did a large painting and finished it up to put it in at the cafe for national youth arts week. I'll have to post it when I get it back which will be tomorrow. I'm going to hang it up in my bedroom - that was the originaly plan anyways. I really enjoy doing art and painting with the children that I look after at the moment too. This photo is a clear example of that! I like compiling all the work and things they do into a neat binder for the parents.

swing low sweet....

When you're little you have dreams. My dream #1 was to become a mermaid - that didn't happen. My dream #2 was to have a house with a veranda and a patio gliders or porch type swing. I don't have a veranda but I have lot of space to build a deck so that will have to do ! We have a sweet little porch swing that I use to use as my couch when I was living in the city. It was really fun because you could rock your little heart out inside. It was defintely unique. Troy has his standard rocking chair - always has wherever we have lived. A rocking chair was the first real gift I had given him :)

in due time

I always dream about vacations. I really want to go back to Kenya next year. I really wanted to go this summer but was unable to pull it off - just way to much stuff going on. It all worked out in the end though. It's not so much of a vacation when I'm there but it is for me. I love it there so much and my 'Kenyan family' are so sweet. I miss them so much it makes me sad when I think about them. Soon hopefully I'll see them. I always get packages in my email for resort type vacations like I'm sure it would be really fun to go somewhere and just RELAX but that's not idea of a good vacation to me. I guess if it was somewhere's where I really wanted to go then it would be awesome. I'd love to do some travelling in Europe. In due time.

rock a bye baby!

Troy and I went hunting in the woods a few weeks ago and we found some pretty cool stuff. Tons of old bottles, cans and this sweet nasty old baby carriage. People say it's kinda creepy - and I guess it is. Since this picture was taken I have spray painted it black and it looks a million times better. So cute. It's going to go in our garden type project we are builiding.

Troy and I are organizing a barn party for this summer. We are going to have another 'heritage party' which consists of watching all the of one minute heritage clips from television. We have been discussing also some things we want to get done to the house this summer - a deck possibly - put in a stove - put in some new windows to name a few. When we need to get the roof done we are looking at getting a metal one. buildings of metals and roofs are pretty durable and don't have to be replaced pretty much ever if you take care of them properly. They are pretty sweet. The barn has metal siding which is a huge bonus but we'll have to shingle the roof at some point so we are thinking a metal on would be good.

So Troy and I have been watching mythbuster's marathons on a weekly basis. It's pretty great show. I like the silly one like hypnosis and hammers hitting hammers - everyday things. I wonder if using tanning machines before you go down south to get a tan helps you not burn while you are there. That would be one that I would like to know the answer too since it seems like a lot of people do that around here. Is the grass always greener on the other side?

then there was 12

12 little chickies all in a row. Well, ok, not in a row -but in my house, in a dresser upside down the two star hotel! Feed, water and newspaper baby. We've had them for almost 2 weeks now. This weekend we are going to put them our in their coop we think. It's been pretty warm so we think it'll be okay. They are chirpy! They are getting more used to us we think and don't seem to be freaking out as much when you try and pick them up. Maybe i'm being hopefull though? They are so sweet!

child sized

I've been trying to collect a few things for my self-employed work as an early childhood educator. I'm getting a nice collection of art supplies (of course - knowing me) but next on my list is other things like music and seating. I've love to get some little chairs and/or bean bag chairs that are child sized. It's nice to start getting these now - because then when i have children I'll already have them. That is if the children I look after don't destroy them first! :)

embarass city

I have this terrible things that happens everytime I wear a name tag. I always forget to take it off. I end up going somewhere and people looking at me funny - then realize later once I get home - or change my clothes that i still have it on. It's even more embarassing when it's a paper one from a workshop or meeting. Oh well. I don't feel like I embarass easily but maybe I'm wrong. This week is going well - just really busy with a lot of different little things going on. I don't even know where to start really. A little stressful. Looking foward getting through some of my 'to do list'
